GUIDANCE

It’s time to get ready for school! Taking your little one to their new school for a tour before classes begin will not only help them cope with idea of starting classes, but will also give you an idea of what the fun-filled, educational days will look like.

Development: By now your five-year-old can count to ten, name favorite colors and hop and skip around at the park. Adjectives are their best friend at this age. The more descriptive words your child has in their growing brain the better they will do in school during reading time, when explaining similarities and differences in pictures and stories, as well as in other classroom scenarios used to teach.

Health and Safety: With starting school, your tot may be riding the bus or other forms of public transportation. Make sure they know street rules and are familiar with stranger danger to help them get to school safely.

Another big issue with five-year-olds is water safety. If your child doesn’t yet know how to swim, now is a perfect time to take lessons or teach them how to have a fun, safe time in the water yourself. Another upside to your little one learning to swim is that there will be nothing stopping you from taking that wonderful, tropical, family vacation you’ve been waiting for. Your child should also know to never swim alone and to always have an adult within arm’s reach when they are near water.

And of course, your five-year-old should be a champ at brushing their teeth. I always say, you don’t have to brush all your teeth, just the ones you want to keep!
