Q & A with Jessica O’Brien
How did you get into pediatrics?
I knew pediatrics was the place for me from my first pediatric rotation in nursing school. Since then, I have spent my entire career working in pediatrics, including as a nurse at a children’s hospital and as a Nurse Practitioner in private practice. I love working with children because of their unique viewpoints on the world, their resilience and strength, and their quirky senses of humor. Pediatrics is also wonderful because it gives me the opportunity to care for children at all stages of development, and to get to know my patients as they grow from infants into unique individuals. I am incredibly lucky to have chosen pediatrics as my field and to get to spend each day serving my amazing patients and their families.
Where did you grow up?
Pequannock, NJ.
Where do you live?
Jersey City Heights, NJ.
What do you enjoy most about working in your neighborhood office?
I have been a resident of Jersey City and Hoboken for nearly 15 years. In that time I’ve watched Jersey City grow from New York’s “sixth borough” into a vibrant, thriving city with its own unique identity and community. I love getting to work in my backyard, serving patients and families from all cultures and backgrounds who have come together to call Jersey City home.
What keeps you motivated?
I am extremely passionate about my work and could not imagine doing anything else. I am frequently amazed by how strong children can be and that inspires me to work as hard as I can to make them feel comfortable, cared for, understood, and supported.
What do you do for fun?
I love to travel the world, cook elaborate meals for friends and family, and watch true-crime documentaries. The most fun days, though, are the ones I get to spend at my home in Jersey City with my husband, and my cat, Beans.
