GUIDANCE
School: This is a crucial time to encourage hard work at school. All the excitement you have for extracurricular activities should also be expressed for homework. At this age, the amount of pride your child feels in their schoolwork will have a direct impact on how open they will be to learning new things in the future.
Health: Eight-year-olds still need at least 60 min of exercise a day, so keep up those evening family walks!
Safety: If you haven’t already, now is a great time to find a local children’s swimming class to help decrease the chance of accidents around pools and open water. Most community pools offer great age-appropriate water safety classes, so look at your local parks and recreation website for more information. If your child is swimming out in the sun, be sure to keep them covered in sunscreen. The less harmful sun exposure a child receives at this age, the less likely they will be to have skin problems later on. The best sunscreens are ones that are not absorbed, but rather create a skin-protective barrier, such as those that contain zinc oxide.
And, as always, helmets save lives, so make sure that little noggin is protected whenever wheels and speed are involved.
